Most Animated creators!
In a world where creativity seems more and more scarce, where massive companies worth millions and multi-millions choose to churn out cheap ai-slop, there are still those out there creating wonderful things with their own hands and minds! From informative series to great illustrations- we’re highlighting just a handful of the brilliant creatives bringing us wonderful animation and illustration on socials.
In honour of the release of Wildwood by Laika Studios last week, a stop-motion film which was 16 years in the make, join us in spotlighting other animators working across the medium… ๐
1.Kartonman3 (@fajnyczlowiek01 // @kartonman3_official_ig)
Karton Man is a stop-motion animator hailing from Poland who makes funny little shorts exploring different online memes, trends, etc. They’re weird and wonderful and completely absurd. I adore the detail and personality that comes through in each character- My personal favourite videos include one about a black cat clapping too loud and one about a bear moisturising its buttocks.
The videos are just so full of life and character, and each is brought to life by the hands of Karton Man!
2. Cosmo (@familyfunwithcosmo)
This Australian animator makes the most adorable, informative videos with his daughter. Together the pair learn about the world around them. Not only is there learning, but also a lot of fun as his daughter often treats viewers to an impromptu song! (Cat Poo in the World and Toilet is a personal favourite of mine- 10/10 banger). Together, Cosmo and his daughter discuss all sorts without a script- making their learning and conversations genuine, funny, and most importantly very human. Those qualities are what makes them so entertaining to watch. As a bonus, the videos often also feature the family’s cats!
I truly respect the page as a dad’s passion project for his daughter. Unlike other online “family content”, the page doesn’t feature his daughter or his own identity- only two adorable animated characters! No exploitation (*cough* family youtubers *cough*).
3. Noah (@nobeyone // @nobey.one)
These animations are some of the greatest, silliest things I’ve ever seen. From episodes following ze Onkey to P.I.S.S. to the random small shorts like ‘Coma in Tacloma’, ‘Guy in the Wall’ and ‘The Warbler’- there really is no shortage of strangeness here. Something truly cursed and beautiful goes on in Nobey One’s mind and personally I hope he keeps creating and animating his shorts! I feel very seen by Mien Strudel (especially when he befriends the evil m&ms) and I’m moved to near tears every time Onkey serenades us. There is some kind of magic in each odd second of Nobey One’s creations, and the humour of it all never fails.
Something about the content and its style of comedy reminds me of a few of the surreal shows I loved growing up from Cartoon Network, like Cow & Chicken, Flapjack, Chowder and Courage the Cowardly Dog.
4. Myranda Hulka (@myrandahulka)
This director and puppet maker creates some hauntingly beautiful stop-motion animations using a range of techniques. If you love the works of Henry Selick or Laika Studios, then you’re bound to love Myranda’s work! They’re dark, gorgeous, and delicate with eerie perfection. You can see the love and care put into each creation just as clearly as you can see a bright future for Myranda Hulka in the animation world!
I look forward to seeing more of her work in time…
5. Sean (@anim8seans)
Sean brings us a range of animations set to/inspired by music, interviews and movies. I particularly love this page because each video differs from one to the next- you can see developments in styles, ideas, techniques and inspirations. There is such a range displayed by this young animator as well as a great taste in music! So if you want a music rec paired with a nice little animated short- head to his page and check it out.
From one playlist curator and new-music detective to another fellow recommender- I look forward to seeing more mini animated music videos!
6. Razan Hazim (@razioheadd)
The work of Razioheadd aka Razan Hazim means so much to me as a fellow Arab. They do something I don’t think I’ve ever seen before, combining great music and pop-culture with Arab influences and references. A Smashing Pumpkins Bullet with Butterfly Wings illustration featuring smoking rat telling you your mum’s emo in a combination of Arabic and English? YES PLEASEEE!! The most gorgeous Fairuz fanart I’ve ever seen? MOREEEEE!!!!!!! I find their work nostalgic and fresh all at once. Their illustrations range from simple to extremely intricate and are each so so uniquely cool.
All I can really say is keep it up ๐ !!
7. Omlet (@omletsvisuals)
Love music? Love mixed media art? Boy are you gonna love Omlet Visuals, a creator pairing great photography with colourful illustartion and editing. Highlights include their pictures of Hayley Williams at Kilby Block Party, their Gwen Stefani Collages and their Rico Nasty animation. The textures, colours, and movement come together and take a photograph, that’s already beautiful, turning it into a work of art.
A multi-talented creative, Omlet also makes music! Keep your eyes peeled dear readers- maybe they’ll make a Rancid Planet first and be a blog double feature!
8. Grace Ruby AKA Butterfly Girl (@butterflygirlgrace //@butterflygirl.grace)
Grace brings my childhood back to me with each illustration she creates. They’re simple, colourful and beautiful. The Juliet portrait and Lemonade the Horse are favourites- there’s something about pencil colouring that I find extremely visually appealing. Her characters and visual style are so distinct- but don’t mistake the whimsy and colour as lacking in substance. If anything there’s a deeper darkness and emotion hidden behind the quirky, girly illustrations. They capture a feeling I think a lot of us might be familiar with, this feeling of being a grown-up kid, expected to know how to navigate this world but instead actively learning it. Feeling weird or lost or behind…
Butterfly Girl’s illustrations see that and capture it perfectly, balancing the visuals and the message in a cute way with such detail.
9. Conrad (@aesthelis // @cnrd.art)
Shapes and colours…0o0!! Conrad is an artist who shares “visually intriguing things” (I couldn’t put it better myself). Their work features all kinds of glyphs and symbols moving and changing to create a range of effects and visuals (apologies, that was a lot of ‘ands’). It’s futuristic and architechtural (more ‘ands’ :-P). Conrad’s work is an example of creative coding- a marriage of technology and art in which coding is used for aesthetic purposes rather than utility.
Who said you can’t be in STEM and the arts- clearly Conrad’s working in STEAM (really thought I cooked there, please appreciate). But this is just another example of how limitless art and animation can be!
10. 2Lauki (@2lauki)
2Lauki is a mixed media artist and animator creating expressive, unique characters who wear the best outfits ever (which she designs ofc). The girls she illustrates come to life in each video in which she presents them- blinking or winking at the audience. It’s edgy and sexy while maintaining a grip on the weird and silly (shoutout to handsome star and fish guy). You can easily see 2Lauki’s individuality shine through alongside the aesthetics that inspire her. As her bio states she went from “watching cartoons to making (her) own”, and you can really see that love and passion reflected in the work created.
Rancid Planet promised to bring you all things cool and 2Lauki is the definition of that!
And that wraps up the first edition of Ratz’ Internet Rat Hole – brought to you by Evil Willy’s Worm-O’s an “all natural” breakfast option for the early birds out there!
